How to Choose a Quality Preschool Checklist

Start by going to our online directory . . .

We have hundereds of listings, so you can find the service closest to your needs.  Once you have a few providers narrowed down, we recommend that you call them and here are a few questions you can ask:

  What is the adult-to-child ratio?
What are the qualifications of their staff?
How many children, and of what age groups, are at the center?
What hours is the center open?
Is there a waiting list? If so, how long?
  What are the fees?
How are the parents kept informed of their children's progress?
Are different special needs and ethnic groups catered for? How so?
How long has the school been in existence?
What experience do the teachers have?
  What is the daily routine?
  What is the parent involvement?
Is there time set aside for the parent and teachers to discuss the child?
  How is discipline handled?
Does the school take field trips?
What is the vacation and holiday schedule?
What is the policy for taking care of sick or injured children?
Do you have to pay when children are sick? Or public holidays?
Is there a discount if two or more children from the same family attend?
  Are the subsides available?
How many weeks holiday do we get per year? Is there a discount?

Then, go and visit the center...

Call and arrange a time to visit when children are there and there is a manager/owner available to talk to you. While you are there, have a look around.

Are the children happy and settled?
Does the school have a lively, creative order to it?
Are the rooms decorated with teacher art or children's art? (Children's art decorating the room is a sign the teacher's value what the children create.)
Do the teachers seem to like what they are doing?
  Are the available activites interesting?
Is there good lighting, ventilation and heating?
Does staff encourage good hygiene practices?
Is there an area for messy play, a space for book reading, a dress-up area, ect?
What is the sleeping area like and what are the sleeping schedules? (If applicable)
Do they cater for special dietary requirements/allergies, and do they administer antibiotices/medicines if necessary?
What is the routine for meal/snack times and who provides the food?
  Check the toliets/changing areas.
What first aid training does the staff have?
What is the protocol in the event of an accident or medical emergency?

These are just a few suggestions. Add or remove any you feel necessary and remember to keep evaluating the center every now and again, to make sure it is still meeting your demands.
